The story began after an interview on “The Pivot” podcast featuring NFL player Jonathan Owens, who is married to Olympic gymnastics legend Simone Biles. During the conversation, when asked jokingly if he was “the catch” in their relationship, Owens answered that he thought the man in the relationship was “the catch.”

He even said “I always say the men are the catch.” Some people online interpreted this as him implying he was the better partner or “prize” compared to Biles — despite her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.

This comment quickly went viral and led to a social media reaction calling Owens a “red flag” and telling Biles to “file divorce papers asap.” These reactions were mostly from people who felt that Owens’ remark was tone-deaf, self-centered, or belittling given Biles’ accomplishment

Owens calling himself “the catch”

Rather than complimenting Biles, some people felt his phrasing made it sound like he valued himself as the more desirable partner, which rubbed some fans the wrong way.

Public interpretation as dismissive

Critics said the comments seemed to downplay Biles’ historic sporting achievements, even if that wasn’t his intention, especially considering her fame and accolades.

Online reaction escalated quickly

Social media users — particularly on TikTok and Twitter — began jokingly and, in some cases, seriously urging Biles to end her marriage. That’s where the headline “Divorce him” came from.

She defended her husband and pushed back against the criticism

Biles said on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that while she initially found the online joke about divorce “hilarious,” it soon hurt her feelings seeing strangers criticizing her husband. She stressed that people don’t actually know him or what he is like in real life.

She clarified the situation

Simone explained that Owens didn’t say she wasn’t the catch — he said he was the catch. She insisted he’s sweet, loving, and supportive and that she’s never met a man like him. Simone emphasized that criticism of her is one thing, but attacking her family or husband is unfair.

She also said she thought everything was fine until she saw social media reactions, at which point the negative comments began to hurt.

Jonathan Owens made a remark during a podcast interview about being “the catch” in his relationship with Simone Biles.

Some people online reacted badly, interpreting the comment as disrespectful — with a few extreme voices urging divorce.

Simone Biles publicly defended him, saying critics didn’t know him and stressing that he’s supportive and loving.

The controversy reflects social media dynamics, not any known marital problems publicly acknowledged by the couple.
