Americans are unhappy with the way President Donald Trump is handling the economy, a new poll showed this week.
In fact, the percentage of people who say they disapprove of his economic policies is at an all-time high, according to a CNN/SSRS survey released Wednesday.
The poll found that 56 percent of adults disapprove of how Trump is dealing with the economy—his worst showing on any CNN survey since his first administration. The other 44 percent said they approved of the president’s economic policies.
The poll results came out as the Trump administration desperately sought to allay fears of a recession after a stock market bloodbath on Monday, when the Nasdaq fell 4 percent to its worst day since 2022 and the S&P 500 dropped nearly 3 percent.
Over the weekend, Trump refused to rule out the possibility of a recession: “I hate to predict things like that,” the president told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo. “There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big.”
Hours later, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick tried to assure the public that “there’s going to be no recession in America” during an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press.
“Anybody who bets against Donald Trump, it’s like the same people who thought Donald Trump wasn’t going to win a year ago,” he said. “You are going to see over the next two years the greatest set of growth coming from America… I would never bet on recession, no chance.”
Trump’s allies both in and outside the White House have blamed Lutnick for the president’s scattered tariff policies, according to Politico. A sweeping 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports went into effect early Wednesday, prompting retaliation from Canada and Europe.
The CNN poll, which was conducted from March 6 to 9 before this week’s stock market slide, showed that 61 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of tariffs.
A national survey released by Emerson College Polling on Tuesday similarly showed that 48 percent of Americans were unimpressed with Trump’s handling of the economy, while 37 percent approved and 15 percent were neutral on the topic.
Trump’s overall job approval rating in the CNN poll stood at 45 percent, while 54 percent of adults expressed disapproval of his performance as president.
In contrast, 51 percent of the survey’s 1,206 adult respondents expressed satisfaction with Trump’s immigration policies.
