Trump shares concerning 4-word message after Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor of New York
Donald Trump is not hiding how he feels about New York City’s new mayor.
Following a tight race, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has made history after being elected the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City. He also becomes the youngest person to take office in over a century. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, narrowly beat out two high-profile candidates: former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who secured 41.6 percent of the vote, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, who received 7.1 percent. Mamdani clinched the win with 50.4 percent.
But while many have praised the win as a major political shift for the city, one person who wasn’t celebrating was President Donald Trump. Just hours after the results were in, Trump took to Truth Social with a four-word post: “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
Trump had backed Cuomo before the election
Before the vote, Trump made his position clear during an appearance on 60 Minutes, stating: “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”
Trump’s message after the polls closed wasn’t the only warning he had issued. Prior to election day, he suggested that a Mamdani win could affect federal funding for the city.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home. I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad.”
Mamdani hits back in bold victory speech
In his speech following the historic result, Mamdani addressed Trump directly: “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. This is not only how we stop Trump. It’s how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: ‘Turn the volume up’.”
He didn’t stop there. Mamdani went on: “We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.
“We will stand alongside unions and expand labor protections because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed.
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.
“So hear me, President Trump when I say this, to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
