Music fans branded the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards ‘the worst ever’ after a string of performances left viewers ‘bored’ and the ceremony appeared to skip three awards during the night.
The ‘nothing burger’ show appeared to exclude Song of the Year, Song of the Summer and Best Hip Hop from this year’s telecast.
Towards the end of the evening, Madonna appeared to forget what award she was accepting on stage from Charli XCX and Troye Sivan.
What is this for, again?’ she quipped after winning Best Dance for Confessions II — The Film, prompting Charli to open the announcement card and jog her memory.
But the bizarre moment didn’t end there, with Madonna then revealing that she had a laser ‘stuck’ up her posterior ‘all night’ before casually walking off stage.
The pop icon had opened the show with a raunchy performance of Bring Your Love and Danceteria alongside Sabrina Carpenter and the Brat hitmaker. The spectacle left some fans confused, while others accused Madonna of lip syncing during the performance.
The appearance marked Madonna’s return to the VMAs after 23 years. The 68-year-old last performed at the awards show in 2003, when she shocked viewers by sharing same-sex kisses on stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Taylor Swift made history at the show as the first artist to receive the Artist Director Honors award. She swept two Moon Man trophies, breaking her tie with Beyonce as the most decorated artist in the history of the VMAs.
