Federal Judge Orders Donald Trump’s Name Removed From Kennedy Center
WASHINGTON β A federal judge has ordered that President Donald Trump’s name be removed from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, delivering a major legal setback to efforts that had rebranded the iconic cultural institution.
In a ruling issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper concluded that the Kennedy Center’s board exceeded its authority when it voted to rename the venue to include Trump’s name. The judge stated that because Congress established and named the institution in honor of President John F. Kennedy, only Congress has the authority to change its official name.
The decision requires officials to remove signage and official references to the “Trump Kennedy Center” within two weeks. The court also blocked plans to temporarily close the performing arts complex for an extensive renovation project.
The dispute stems from actions taken after Trump allies gained control of the Kennedy Center’s board and approved a measure adding the president’s name to the institution. The move sparked legal challenges, criticism from opponents, and debate over whether the board had the legal authority to alter the name of a congressionally created national memorial.
Judge Cooper wrote that Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name and that any formal renaming would require congressional approval. The ruling emphasized that the board could not unilaterally change the institution’s official identity.
Trump sharply criticized the decision and signaled he may seek alternative arrangements involving Congress regarding the future governance of the center. Supporters of the administration argued that the ruling will be challenged on appeal, while opponents hailed the decision as a defense of the Kennedy Center’s historic mission and legal charter.
The legal battle is expected to continue as appeals move forward, ensuring that the future direction of one of America’s most prominent cultural institutions remains a subject of national attention.
