Behind the trophies, records and legendary moments was a frightening chapter of motherhood that Serena Williams has never forgotten.
When Serena gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017, what should have been a joyful moment quickly became a medical emergency.
After an emergency C-section, Serena began experiencing severe breathing difficulties. Because of her previous history with blood clots, she feared she was suffering another pulmonary embolism—and she was right. Doctors discovered several blood clots in her lungs and immediately began treatment.
But the ordeal didn’t end there.
The intense coughing caused by the embolism caused Serena’s C-section wound to reopen. Doctors subsequently discovered a large hematoma—an accumulation of blood—in her abdomen. She required additional procedures, including surgery and placement of a filter to help prevent further clots from reaching her lungs.
Years later, Serena has continued speaking openly about the experience. At the 2026 Forbes Power Women’s Summit, she reflected on how important it was that medical professionals listened when she knew something was wrong, crediting her doctor with helping save her life.
For a woman celebrated around the world for extraordinary physical strength, the experience revealed a deeply vulnerable side of motherhood.
Yet Serena’s story didn’t end in fear.
She recovered, returned to professional tennis and continued building her life as a mother. In 2023, she and husband Alexis Ohanian welcomed their second daughter, Adira River.
Today, Serena uses her experience to advocate for better maternal healthcare and for women to have their concerns taken seriously.
